The Best Anime You Need to Watch This Fall (2022)

The hype is real for this Fall’s lineup of new and returning anime. Usually, we can hope for maybe one or two anime to stand out and really become great. This year there are five! And this isn’t counting smaller anime on our watchlist like Housing Complex C. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up and appreciate how great it is to be an anime fan right now.

Thousand-Year Blood War

Scheduled to release October, 2022

A decade of waiting is finally over for Bleach fans! The long-awaited season will be covering the Thousand-Year Blood War arc and filling in some questions we’ve long had about Quincies and their origins. Most of the Quincy were exterminated by Soul Reapers 200 years ago to prevent the worlds from collapsing due to imbalance after the Quincy hunted the Hollows to near extinction, but now they are waging war in the Soul Society to fulfill an ancient prophecy. Within Quincy lore is a song that describes how their sealed king would regain his heart after 900 years, his intellect 90 years after that, and then his power 9 years after his intellect. What most Quincies don’t know is that there is another part to the song: 9 days after he regains his power, the emperor will regain the world. The Thousand-Year Blood War is the result of this legend, or prophecy, coming to pass and the king, Yhwach, the Father of Quincies, making his move to collapse Hueco Mundo, the Soul Society, and the Human World together into one.

This season promises to be an epic one with lots of amazing fights between the Sternritters, super powered Quincies, and all of our favorite characters. Bleach is famous for having an incredible supporting cast, and there are yet more characters to become acquainted with as the Royal Guard, a.k.a. Zero Division, make their appearance. But besides the enthralling fight scenes we will be treated with, I am most looking forward to finding out about Ichigo’s mom and my favorite uptight upright Quincy, Uryu Ishida, as well as the enigmatic Soul King who we’ve only heard mention of a handful of times in the past.

Hopefully, Disney+ will have mercy on us and we can all watch this anime when it comes out in October! If it does get stuck in anime jail, you’ll have plenty of time to rewatch the 366 episodes and brush up on what you might have forgotten in the past 10 years.

Original run: April 3, 2016 – present

Season 6 Release Date: October 1, 2022

Episodes: 113

This Fall students at U.A. won’t be hitting the books, they’ll be heading to war. Readers of the My Hero manga have been filling anime watchers with trepidation for this coming season which is sure to be full of epic battles and heavy drama. We last saw Shigaraki going to Dr. Daruma to receive All for One’s quirk, which, if successful, would allow him to steal other people’s quirks. Combined with his already troublesome abilities, like his reawakened quirk that can deteriorate anything his power touches even when he’s not physically touching it and his immense durability which allows him to live despite being pulverized, he is on his way to becoming a level S villain to be feared.

If it was just Shigaraki the heroes had to deal with things that would be super difficult, but they are also facing the entire army of the Paranormal Liberation Front. During the coming battles that are sure to take up most of the season, we can look forward to Midoriya making use of his new quirk Black Whip, as well as getting a new ability, his classmates on and refining their abilities, other (adult) heroes making their way onto the scene, and more drama from the Endeavor family.

Mob Psycho 100

(Season 3)

Directed by: Yuzuru Tachikawa, Takahiro Hasui (#26–

Written by: Hiroshi Seko

Music by: Kenji Kawai

Studio: Bones

Licensed by: Crunchyroll (streaming), Funimation (home video)

Original run: July 12, 2016 – present

Season 3 Release date: October 5, 2022

Episodes: 25

Poor Mob just can’t catch a break. Last season ended with a monumental battle between our esper and megalomaniac, Toichiro Suzuki, and now he must deal with another anxiety-inducing situation- Middle School. As if planning for the future isn’t stressful enough, Kageyama is also trying to balance a job of exorcising spirits while trying to hide the fact he is the powerful esper who inspired the Bucket Head religion. And on top of all of that, Dimple seems to be acting up and maybe plotting to follow through on his original goal of becoming a god.

The next season covers the Divine Tree arc, a reference to the giant broccoli that grew on the site of Mob’s battle with Toichiro. Are we about to see Mob fighting giant broccoli? Probably, because that’s just the kind of life Mob has. However, since the “Tree” was created from Mob’s psychic energy, we can be sure there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Along with the Divine Tree, we will also have the Telepathy Mini-arc and ???% arc so we may get to see just how powerful our crazy little Mob is.

Episodes: 12

Part 2 is Scheduled to release on October 1, 2022

The Folgers are coming back with more cloak-and-dagger activities that only we and Anya can fully appreciate. As a reader of the manga, I cannot wait to see the newest member of the family animated and receiving the love he deserves. A special family like the Folgers will need an equally special pet, and this exceptional pup fits the bill since he has some psychic abilities that, once again, only Anya knows about.

In addition to the new family member, we can look forward to watching the handsome agent Twilight as he works to stop terrorists from setting off bombs in the city and igniting the war. The underlying political tensions are a reminder that this anime isn’t all about the shenanigans, and Operation Strix must keep moving forward. Our lovable little champion of world peace will keep studying to get good grades (even though she has a talent for getting the lowest test scores) and making friends with Damian (who doesn’t realize he has a crush on her). The other notable thing to watch out for in this continuation of season 1 is a possible love rival for Yor.

Chainsaw Man

Directed by: Ryū Nakayama, Makoto Nakazono

Written by: Hiroshi Seko

Music by: Kensuke Ushio

Studio: MAPPA

Licensed by: Crunchyroll

Season 1 release date: October 11, 2022

If you’ve been missing a good horror anime, the new release of Chainsaw Man may be able to fill the void. This story takes place in a world full of Devils- entities born of human fears. The worse the fear, the stronger the Devil. Although usually dangerous and malevolent, some Devils will form contracts with humans, and Denji, our main protag, is one of these people. Contracts with Devils give humans special abilities, and Denji’s Devil, Pochita, gives him the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws. Many people who have formed contracts with Devils use their abilities to become Devil Hunters. These individuals take on Devils that threaten the peace and safety of common civilians and work in both the Private Sector and Public Safety. Denji becomes a Public Safety Devil Hunter and we get to follow his crazy career of slaying fears come to life.

A lot of the manga readers are super pumped to see this story animated. Fans of action/horror will be delighted with the portrayal of Devils and the fights to subdue them. Those looking for more than blood and gore will appreciate the layers of plot and psychological thriller aspect. This anime already has a lot going for it being one of Shonen Jump’s most popular stories, and the fifth best-selling manga series in the first half of 2021. It’s definitely on the list of anime to watch when it comes out in October.

It’s hard not to be excited about next month with all of the great anime coming out or returning. It might be a great time to introduce a friend or loved one to these amazing stories so you have someone to fanboy/girl with. I’ve covered these anime more in-depth in other articles, so if you want to catch up on the series or just find out more, make sure you check them out. Which anime are you most excited about?
